Year 1 – Key Stage 1

Year 1

Year 1 is a child’s first year as a fully-fledged member of primary school. Our teachers will ensure that the transition from Early Years runs as smoothly as possible for your child, with special lessons over the summer and carefully designed classes for the Autumn Term.

Our Year 1 teachers are all fully qualified KS1 specialists, who know the areas that children find the most challenging and, most importantly, know how to teach them effectively. Classes are fun, active and engaging, with songs, stories and dancing taking key roles. Children are taught these key concepts in our lessons, all in line with the National Curriculum objectives:

English

  • Spoken language – enhancing speaking and listening skills
  • Word reading – decoding and blending
  • Comprehension – retrieval, inference and prediction
  • Handwriting – upper and lower case plus digits 0-9
  • Transcription – basic dictation using ‘tricky words’ and appropriate ‘phonemes’.
  • Composition – sentence structure and simple story sequencing
  • Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation – capital letters, full stops, nouns and adjectives

Maths

  • Number and place value – recognising, ordering, counting and writing numbers to 100
  • Addition and subtraction – adding and subtracting one and two digit numbers and number bonds
  • Multiplication and division – one step problems using pictures and arrays
  • Fractions – recognising halves and quarters in shapes and quantities
  • Measurement – comparing, describing and problem solving with length, mass, capacity, money and time
  • Shape – recognising and describing common 2D and 3D shapes
  • Position and direction – whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns

Did you know that…

At the end of Year 1, most children will take part in a phonics screening check during the same week in June. This test is designed to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding and blending skills to the appropriate standard. Phonics is a key area of our KS1 English lessons at GBA and we will ensure your child is successfully prepared.

What Our Parents Say…

“Just a quick thank you for your patience with Charlotte and excellent and encouraging teaching. Your lessons have really helped, and it has shown now with the school’s lessons (they only just started last week). She’s already gone up a group and her improvement in maths has shown too.”
Catherine Russell, mum of Charlotte Year 1

Frequently Asked Questions

Learning to form letters correctly from the beginning is key to children achieving a good standard of handwriting. Once children have picked up ‘bad habits’, it is exceedingly difficult to undo it. We work on letter formation every lesson and encourage children to use the correct pencil grip and posture too. Encourage your child to write little notes, shopping lists and cards, giving them a purpose to write – this is great for confidence building!
Our teachers are all highly experienced in the teaching of phonics and it is a key focus of our Year 1 English sessions. “Little and often” is often the key to effectively grasping blending. Encourage your child to join in with the Jolly Phonics and Jack Hartmann songs (see useful websites) We also have lots of phonics focused holiday courses to give children a boost.
